What does a box of strawberries at the Greek Nuclear Center “Demokritos” in 1986 have to do with a diplomatic bath in the cold waters of Palomares in 1966? They were both used by political leaders and scientists to manage the world’s panic after two nuclear accidents; in Chernobyl and in Palomares. In both cases scientists and diplomats did not use scientific arguments. Instead, they risked their own lives to persuade the world that radiation did not pose high risks.
